Venu [LIVE] Zakir Hussain
Classical flute music from India that is both devotional and romantic. The divine playing of Hariprasad with tabla master Zakir Hussain moves mountains of emotion.
This historic concert took place in 1974 at the Stone House (literally a large granite room) in Fairfax, California, and was a youthful collaboration between two true geniuses of Indian classical music.

Selects Zakir Hussain
Zakir Hussain's "Selects" presents the maestro's own selections from some of his favorite tabla solos of the past several years. Total time: 62:09 Produced by Zakir Hussain & Antonia Minnecola
My tabla teacher recommended this CD by saying that Zakir has started releasing his best sessions to date in this album. Hence the title "Selects". This is truly an astounding album.
Two tracks are particularly memorable - one in which he plays a teen taal peshkar and another in which he plays kaydas. The peshkar is a traditional one - a great tutorial for tabla students on how to build up discrete sounds into a peshkar phrase and then play variations finally segueing into a
kayda.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan & Zakir Hussain
I'm a big fan of Amjad Ali Khan and the first track (Rag Pilu/Kirwani) is superbly nuanced and moving. Zakir Hussain's controlled performance has all his flair without some of his flamboyance, so he complements Amjad's performance beautifully without stealing the show. I found the second track (Ragmala) somewhat disappointing, but perhaps that's because the first track is so good in comparison. |
Essence of Rhythm Zakir Hussain
This disc lives up to its name. Zakir Hussain is an extraordinary artist and his tabla playing almost seems melodic at times. There is a drone accompaniment from Suchismita Chatterjee, but Zakir is very much to the fore on each of the three tracks. Incredible virtuosity on an instrument you either love or hate. It is entrancing - and I love it.

Making Music Zakir Hussain
It's a simple enough concept: gather four great musicians--percussionist Zaikir Hussain, flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, guitarist John McLaughlin, and saxophonist Jan Garbarek--into a studio, push "record," and see what happens. In the case of Making Music, quite a bit does happen.
